Who can do what in a shared Memory?
There are four roles. The person who created the Memory is its Owner, and everyone invited joins as a Collaborator. You move people from there afterwards, under Memory Settings → Participants.
The four roles
- Viewer: sees everything, adds nothing. No + button. Can still delete a Moment they added earlier, and can leave.
- Collaborator: adds Moments of any kind, and edits or deletes their own. Nobody else’s. Can leave.
- Admin: everything a Collaborator can do, plus delete anyone’s Moments, rename and recolour the Memory, and invite people and change their roles. Can leave.
- Owner: everything, including promoting and demoting Admins, and deleting the whole Memory.
There is exactly one Owner. The role is set when the Memory is created and is never handed to anyone else, which is why the Owner has no Leave. For them, deleting the Memory is the way out. See “How do I leave or delete a shared Memory?”.
How the app shows a role
Each person carries a small coloured tag beside their name in Participants: OWNER, ADMIN, COLLAB. or VIEW. While you are changing a role, a Permissions card ticks and crosses five lines, so you see the difference before you commit:
- See every Moment and its media.
- Add Moments.
- Delete anyone’s Moments.
- Rename, recolour and lay out the Memory.
- Invite, remove and change roles.
Change someone’s role
- Open the Memory and tap ⋯ → Memory Settings → Participants.
- Tap the ⋯ next to the person, then Manage role.
- Move the handle to the role you want. The Permissions card follows it.
- Tap Update role.
An Admin can move people between Viewer and Collaborator. Only the Owner can make someone an Admin, or change an Admin. Nobody can hand over Owner. And a change that takes rights away is called out first: “This change is more restrictive: they’ll be able to do fewer things in this Memory.”
Two things go quiet in a shared Memory, whoever you are. Sort… is missing from the ⋯ menu, so everyone reads the Moments in the same order. See “How do I rearrange what’s inside a Memory?”.
